LED lighting is already finding favour in a wide range of workplace environments, from offices to factories to warehouses. Workplace lighting is typically left switched on for long periods of time, sometimes for 24 hours per day, so LEDs can offer very significant savings in terms of electricity consumption and replacement costs.

For those companies with challenging targets for reducing their environmental impact, switching to LEDs can be an easy way to cut their carbon footprint, for a relatively low initial investment and very quick payback times.

One very well documented application of LEDs in the workplace is at the new headquarters of Sentry Equipment Corporation, a US-based manufacturer of process equipment. It installed LED lighting both inside and outside the new building to deliver long-term energy savings and to reduce its maintenance requirements.

LEDs are used throughout the office building for all decorative, conference room, restroom and aisle lighting. In addition, all external lighting is achieved using LEDs, with the exception of the flagpole illumination.

Through the extensive use of LEDs, the building’s lighting load was reduced from an anticipated 75 kW to an actual 30 kW, giving a 1.3 year payback period for the investment. With the LEDs expected to have useful life of 50,000 hours, the maintenance requirement for replacing failed bulbs is also considerably reduced.

Sentry has won environmental awards for its forward thinking project and been featured on CNBC and in The New York Times.
